By Faith: A Century of Progress
is the story of the first historically African American Episcopal congregation in Mississippi. Before the Civil War, many slaves had attended church with their masters and were listed as communicants on parish registers. After the war, the question was how to meet the religious needs of the newly freed black population. The answer to this question was the founding of Saint Mark's in 1883.
The author, Barbara Beadle Barber, a lifelong Episcopalian, has written an informative and compelling work drawing upon interviews, personal papers, church documents, photos and more to create a rare jewel that will surely be of interest not only to Episcopalians in Mississippi and those connected with St. Mark's, but to the Episcopal church at large.
